About Grief and Loss

What is Grief Counseling?

Grief counseling is a specific form of therapy that helps individuals to manage grieves and addresses their personal or mental loss in an enthusiastic and spirited manner. Grief counseling is provided by experienced professionals such as counselors, psychologists, or social personnel either individually or in groups, and also by informal groups such as social communities, churches, or organizations that are dedicated to helping individuals in handling their pain or specific loss.

What are the Tasks Performed During Grief Counseling?

Some of the tasks that are performed during grief counseling include training on managing emotional expression which helps to handle a wide range of feelings such as:

• Accepting the pain or loss,

• Adjusting according to life after the loss,

• Managing the changes after the loss

Common feelings that are experienced by individuals and addressed by the grief counselors during the session include:

• Sadness,

• Anger,

• Anxiety,

• Loneliness,

• Relief,

• Guilt,

• Isolation,

• Numbness

• Confusion,

Apart from the above-mentioned changes, some of the behavioral changes that are noticed in many individuals include tiredness, being disorganized, having trouble in concentrating, appetite changes, sleep problems, daydreaming or vivid dreams.

Risks

There is a possibility of a slight risk at the time of treatment of complicated grief. Such risks include chronic or prolonged grieving, unexpected loss due to a violent accident, homicide, suicide, or even the death of an individual. These factors many times confuse the grieving procedure due to the surprising and unpredicted nature of the individuals, which arises due to the desires of the individuals for their loved ones. During the grief counseling, initially, an adverse effect is seen, due to the direct focus on the loss. Two other factors that may affect an individual’s nature is the type of relationship the individual had with the loss and their resilience.

Techniques Used During Grief Counseling

There are a number of grief therapies that are used by professionals during grief counseling to treat a different type of patients. Some of them are mentioned below:

• Talking About the Loss

When speaking with the therapist, an individual who is attending the session is free to talk in detail about the problems that led to the situation. During this point, they can express their feelings regarding the troubles. The process of discussing and talking about loss helps them to release their frustrations, worries, and sadness, which is very therapeutic. On the other hand, if a person is in grieve due to the death of their loved ones; talking about the tragedy in a peaceful space with the freedom to cry can be really a process of healing.

• Being Direct

During the therapy, counselors use the name of the person who died and also the words such as 'death' and 'dead' when speaking about their loved one.

• Discriminating between Loss and Life

When you are broken with the thought of divorce, loss of a husband, and loss of time you have to spend with your kids, therapists or counselors help to shift the focus from the loss to the life including her kids and other family memories. This helps patients realize that the loss does not mean that the years of your life with your loved ones were worthless. This technique is really impactful for individuals suffering from grief.

• Coping with Guilt

The therapist works with individuals on their feeling of guilt. They measure whether the individual’s guilt is rational or irrational. When the guilt comes from mistakes that they made in their life is considered as rational. For rational guilt, therapists work with clients on forgiving themselves, teach them how to learn from their mistakes which allows them to move forward in their life.
